Getting Started with Your Terraria Server

This guide covers everything you need to set up your Terraria dedicated server and start playing with friends.

Prerequisites

  • An active Terraria server from SpillHosting
  • Terraria installed on your PC via Steam
  • Your server IP and port from the control panel

Step 1: Access the Control Panel

  1. Go to panel.spillhosting.no
  2. Log in with your credentials
  3. Select your Terraria server

Step 2: Configure Your Server

  1. Go to the Startup tab
  2. Set your World Name — this creates a new world with this name
  3. Set a Server Password if you want to restrict access
  4. Choose your World Size — Small, Medium, or Large
  5. Choose the Difficulty — Classic, Expert, Master, or Journey
  6. Set Max Players (default: 8)
  7. Click Save

Step 3: Start the Server

  1. Navigate to the Console tab
  2. Click Start
  3. Wait for the world to generate — larger worlds take more time on first boot

The server is ready when you see "Listening on port" in the console.

Step 4: Connect to Your Server

  1. Launch Terraria
  2. Select Multiplayer
  3. Select your character
  4. Click Join via IP
  5. Enter your server IP address
  6. Enter the port number
  7. Enter the password if required

Step 5: Set Up Admin Access

To manage your server in-game, you need the admin password:

  1. Check the Startup tab for the admin password
  2. In-game, open chat and type /password [admin_password]
  3. You now have admin access to run server commands

Essential Server Commands

Use these in the server console or in-game with admin access:

CommandDescription
/kick [player]Kick a player
/ban [player]Ban a player
/timeShow current in-game time
/say [message]Broadcast a message
/saveForce world save
/exitSave and shut down the server
/password [pass]Set or change server password
/motd [message]Set message of the day
/seedDisplay the world seed

Troubleshooting

Can't Connect

  • Verify the server is running and fully started
  • Double-check the IP and port number
  • Ensure you're entering the correct password
  • Check that your Terraria version matches the server version

World Won't Generate

  • Ensure enough disk space is available
  • Try a smaller world size first
  • Check console logs for specific errors

Lag or Desync

  • Use a server location closest to your player group
  • Reduce the max player count
  • Boss fights and events with many entities may cause temporary lag
