Getting Started with Your Valheim Server

This guide walks you through setting up your Valheim dedicated server and connecting to it for the first time with your friends.

Prerequisites

  • An active Valheim server from SpillHosting
  • Valheim installed on your PC via Steam
  • Your server IP address and port (found in the control panel)

Step 1: Access the Control Panel

  1. Go to panel.spillhosting.no
  2. Log in with your SpillHosting credentials
  3. Select your Valheim server from the server list

Step 2: Configure Your Server

  1. Navigate to the Startup tab
  2. Set your desired Server Name — this is what appears in the server browser
  3. Set a Server Password — players will need this to join
  4. Adjust the World Name if desired (default is fine for most users)
  5. Click Save to apply changes

Step 3: Start the Server

  1. Go to the Console tab
  2. Click Start to boot your server
  3. Wait for the server to fully initialize — the first startup may take a few minutes as it generates the world

Look for "Game server connected" in the console to confirm the server is ready.

Step 4: Connect to Your Server

Using the Server Browser

  1. Open Valheim and click Start Game
  2. Select your character and click Start
  3. Click Join Game and then the Join IP tab
  4. Enter your server IP and port (e.g., 123.456.78.90:2456)
  5. Enter your server password when prompted

Using Steam Server Browser

  1. In Steam, go to View > Game Servers
  2. Click the Favorites tab
  3. Click Add a Server and enter your server IP:port
  4. Click Add This Address to Favorites
  5. Select the server and click Connect

Step 5: Verify Everything Works

Once connected, check the following:

  • You can place and destroy objects
  • Other players can connect using the same IP
  • The world saves correctly (check console for save messages)

Troubleshooting

Can't Connect to Server

  • Ensure the server is fully started (check the console)
  • Double-check the IP address and port
  • Make sure you're entering the correct password
  • Verify the server is not in the middle of a restart

Server Crashes on Start

  • Check the console logs for error messages
  • Ensure you have enough RAM allocated
  • Try resetting to default startup settings

High Latency

  • Choose a server location closest to you and your players
  • Reduce the number of simultaneous connections if needed
