Getting Started with Your Valheim Server

This guide walks you through setting up your Valheim dedicated server and connecting to it for the first time with your friends.

Prerequisites

• An active Valheim server from SpillHosting
• Valheim installed on your PC
• Your server address, which you find in the game panel

Step 1: Open your server

1. Log in on the SpillHosting website with your SpillHosting account
2. Open the game panel and select your Valheim server
3. The Overview tab shows your server address (IP:port), the join code while crossplay is on, and the server password

Step 2: Configure your server

1. Open the Startup tab
2. Set your Server Name. This is what appears in the server browser
3. Set a Server Password. It needs 5 to 20 characters and must not appear inside the server name, otherwise the server refuses to start
4. Leave World Name as it is for now. To create, upload or switch worlds later, use the Worlds tab

Each field saves on its own as soon as you change it. Changes take effect the next time the server starts.

Step 3: Start the server

1. Press Start in the server header
2. Open the Console tab and wait for the server to finish booting. The first start takes a few minutes while the world generates

"Game server connected" in the console means the server is ready.

Step 4: Connect to your server

1. Start Valheim, select your character and open Join Game
2. Add the server with the join code or the address from the Overview tab, for example 203.0.113.10:25685
3. Enter the server password when asked

The join code changes on every restart, so always copy the current one from the panel. Both routes are explained step by step in joining your Valheim server.

Adding it to your Steam favourites

1. In Steam, open View and then Game Servers
2. On the Favorites tab, click Add a server
3. Enter the IP with the query port, which is the game port plus one. A panel address of 203.0.113.10:25685 becomes 203.0.113.10:25686 here
4. Click Add This Address to Favorites, then select the server and click Connect

Step 5: Check that everything works

Once connected, check the following:

• You can place and destroy objects
• Other players can connect with the same code or address
• The world saves correctly (the console reports each save)

Troubleshooting

Can't connect to the server

• Make sure the server has fully started (check the console)
• If you use the join code, copy the current one again. The old one stops working after a restart
• Double-check the address and port
• Make sure you are entering the correct password

Steam says the server is not responding

• You used the game port. Steam's server browser needs the query port, one higher

Server stops right after starting

• Check the console for error messages
• Check that the password has at least 5 characters and does not appear in the server name

High latency

• Choose a server location close to you and your players
