How to Reset the Nether in Minecraft

Want a fresh Nether without losing the rest of the world? You can reset the Nether on its own. The Overworld and the End stay exactly as they are.

Before you start

• Take a backup in the Backups tab with Create backup
• Ask players to leave the Nether first. Anyone who logged out there reappears at the same coordinates in the new Nether, which can be inside rock or above lava

Step by step

1. Stop your server in the game panel

2. Open the Files tab, or connect over SFTP

3. Delete the Nether folder. Where it is depends on your server software:

   • Paper, Spigot and Purpur: the folder world_nether in the server's main folder
   • Vanilla, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge: the folder DIM-1 inside your world folder, so world/DIM-1

   If your world has a different name than world (see level-name in server.properties), use that name instead

4. Start the server again

Minecraft generates a new Nether as soon as players enter it.

Good to know

• Only the Nether is reset. The Overworld and the End are not affected
• Existing portals in the Overworld keep working. The first trip through each one creates a new matching portal in the new Nether
• Everything players built or left in the Nether is gone, including portals, bases and item drops
